| Athlete, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. Although in his first season of athletics in 1970 he won the Scottish junior triple jump title, he only took up sprinting seriously six years later at the age of 24. He won a record six medals at the Commonwealth Games, including gold in the 200 m and sprint relay in 1978, and gold at both 100 m and 200 m in 1982, tying with Mike McFarlane (England) in the 200 m. He was Olympic gold medallist in the 100 m in Moscow in 1980, when at the age of 28 he was the oldest ever champion at the event. |
