| biography:
| Cricketer, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. Educated in Sydney, he became a professional cricketer in 1977, made his Test debut against England in 1978–9, and was captain 1984–94. The Australian team regained much of its lustre under his leadership, regaining the Ashes in 1989 and retaining them in 1990–1 and 1993. A left-hander, he was Australia's most prolific batsman since Don Bradman, and on his retirement in 1994 held Test records for the most Test appearances (156), and having captained Australia in more Tests than anyone (93). His most outstanding achievement is as the highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket: in 1993 he beat Sunil Gavaskar's record with 10 123 runs, and he increased this record to a final 11 174 runs. He was Australian of the Year in 1990. |
