| Artist, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK, the son of the poet Allan Ramsay. He trained in Italy, worked first in Edinburgh, and settled in London in 1762. Well known for his portraits of women, in 1767 he was appointed portrait painter to George III. |
