| biography:
| Novelist and short-story writer, born in Dundee, E Scotland, UK. She studied at Warwick University. Regarded as an important and original Scottish voice, her first collection of short stories was Night Geometry and the Garscadden Trains (1990, Saltire Award for Best First Book, Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize). Her first novels were Looking for the Posssible Dance (1994, Somerset Maugham Award) and So I Am Glad (1995, Encore Award, joint winner of the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award). A third novel, Everything You Need (1999), is an ambitious examination of relationships. Her non-fiction works include The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - BFI Film Classics (1997) and On Bullfighting (2000). |
