| Biologist, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow, and specialised in virology. His work, especially that on influenza, led to his appointment as head of the World Influenza Centre in London from 1950. In 1957, with Swiss virologist Jean Lindenmann he described the protein, interferon, a natural antiviral agent, which is now used in therapy. |
