biography: English politician, born in Penshurst, Kent, SE England, UK. He became a cavalry officer in the English Civil War on the parliamentary side, and was wounded at Marston Moor (1644). In 1645 he entered parliament, and served as governor in several cities. An extreme Republican, he resented Cromwell's usurpation of power, and retired to Penshurst (1653–9). After the Restoration he lived on the European mainland, but in 1677 was pardoned and returned to England. In 1683 he was implicated on very little evidence in the Rye House Plot, and beheaded.
