biography: Actor, born in Pamplona, N Spain. The son of a captain in the Guardia Civil, he started his career on stage with the play La felicidad no lleva impuesto de lujo (1961). He gained immediate recognition, and made his film debut co-starring in Atraco a las tres (1962, director José M&supa; Forqué). Among his most popular films are Ninette y un señor de Murcia (1965, director Fernando Fernán-Gómez), Pisito de solteras (1972, director Fernando Merino), Manolo la nuit (1973, director Mariano Ozores), El Crack (1981) and El Crack dos (1983), both directed by José Luis Garci, Los santos inocentes (1984) (Best Actor, Cannes, director Mario Camus), and Marcelino pan y vino (1991, director Luigi Comencini). He has also made several television series, including Don Quijote and Por fin solos.
