| Literary critic, born in Naples, Campania, SW Italy. A contributor to Benedetto Croce's review La Critica, he moved away from Croce's theories and maintained the importance of an ‘artistic conscience’ within a work of art, and introduced the concept of ‘style’. Notable is his work on the poets Ungaretti and Montale. Other works include Letteratura italiana del Novecento (1940, 1958) and Scritti di estetica (1952). |
