| biography:
| Novelist, born in Lautschin, E Germany. Brought up in Berlin in prosperous circumstances, he went to Munich in 1913 to study, and later entered theatrical and literary life. Forced to leave the country in 1933, after restless years of exile he returned to Europe in 1949 as a US citizen and settled in Florence to write. A recurrent theme in his work is power, its abuse, and the destructive effect on the human personality, and he frequently employs historical topics. His many works include Der Teufel (1926), Der Pakt (1949), and Viele heißen Kain (1950). |
