His early poetry showed him to be a pioneer of Expressionism, notably Tag und Nacht (1894), Die Schöpfung (1897), and Die Blüte des Chaos (1905). His major work was the theatre trilogy Aeon (1907–11). Although of Jewish birth he refused to emigrate, and was interned in the concentration camp at Gurs, in the French Pyrenees.
