| US marine officer, born in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, USA. He enlisted in 1950 and rose through the ranks to become Commandant of the Marine Corps (1987–1991). He assisted in the formulation of national and international policy and strategy and served as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as military advisor to the president, the National Security Council, and the secretary of Defence. A combat veteran of Korea and Vietnam, he also contributed articles on defence issues to professional journals. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1991. |
