| Novelist, poet, and literary critic, born in Leiden, W Netherlands. His first works were the illegally published collection of poems De vernietiging (1942, Destruction) and a novel about his experiences in a war camp in De nederlaag (1951, Defeat). The novel Geur der droefenis (1980, Smell of Sadness) is generally regarded as his masterpiece. In 1989 he was awarded the Constantijn Huygensprijs for his entire body of work. |
