Taken to the USA as an infant, he played baseball with the Brooklyn Eckfords in the 1860s and the Philadelphia Athletics (1871–5), managing them in the last two years. In the 1870s he founded a sporting goods company, and was part owner and president of the Phillies (1883–1902). |
