| US soldier, born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. A Connecticut militia officer, he commanded federal forces from First Bull Run (Jul 1861) to the final battles in the Carolinas. One of 15 officers to receive the ‘Thanks of Congress’ (for taking Fort Fisher, NC), he remained in the regular army after the Civil War and saw extensive service on the frontier. He was in command of the expedition against the Sioux when Custer met his fate at Little Big Horn (Jun 1876). He sat on several boards that negotiated treaties with Native Americans. |
