| biography:
| Rabbi and educator, born in Oberwesel, Germany. He went to the USA in 1939, and was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles (1957), where he became dean (1959–71). In 1971 he was appointed president of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He belonged to a number of Jewish, academic, and civic organizations including the Zionist Organization of America and the American Civil Liberties Union. |
