| Composer, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Leipzig Conservatory (1887–91), became conductor of the Wellington Orchestral Society (1891–7), and collected and recorded much Maori music, which influenced his music of the period. He was professor of composition and harmony at the New South Wales Conservatory (1915–35). His work includes 13 symphonies, many of which are orchestrations of his earlier string quartets, 10 operas, a Maori Rhapsody, five concertos, and a considerable body of chamber music. |
