| biography:
| Novelist, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, became a successful actor, and subsequently combined writing with politics, as Liberal MP for Coventry (1906–10). His first published novel was A Romance of Wastdale (1895). The Four Feathers (1902) captured the popular imagination, and The Broken Road (1907) cemented his success. With At the Villa Rose (1910) he started writing detective novels, and introduced his ingenious Inspector Hanaud. Several of his books have been filmed. |
