| British naval commander. He became captain in 1914, commanded with distinction the battleship Colossus at the Battle of Jutland (1916), and for the remainder of World War 1 directed operations at the Admiralty. Promoted to the rank of rear-admiral, he was commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean fleet (1936–9), becoming in 1939 Admiral of the Fleet and First Sea Lord. |
