| Surgeon, born in Culloden, Georgia, USA. He studied at Johns Hopkins University and Vanderbilt University Hospital, and joined the staff at Vanderbilt (1925–41) and Johns Hopkins (1941–64), where he pioneered the surgical treatment of various congenital defects of the heart. He performed the first ‘blue baby’ operation with the paediatrician Helen Taussig. |
