| Poet, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at the University of London, and was called to the bar in 1857, but then abandoned law for literature. His works include The Season: a Satire (1861), The Human Tragedy (1862), and an autobiography (1911). He became poet laureate in 1896. |
