| biography:
| King of Castile (1312–50), born in Salamanca, Spain. He became king when only one year old, but once of age (1325), he began to restore order in a court fragmented by factions of nobles. He gave new powers to the Cortes and chose officials without aristocratic affiliations. He also made important administrative and legal reforms, and was diplomatic in his dealings with France and England. He is the supposed writer of the first troubadour song recorded in Castilian, which appears in the Canzoniere portoghese della Biblioteca Vaticana (1875). Part of the Libro de montería has also been attributed to him. |
