| biography:
| Italian politician, prime minister (1859, 1864–6), and general, born in Turin, Piedmont, NW Italy. As war minister he reorganized the army and was briefly prime minister in 1859. He was in charge of the Piedmontese army during the Crimea war (1855–6) and led the onslaught on brigandage in 1861. He was prime minister again (1864–6), then led the Italian army during the 3rd Independence War (1866), but retired after the Custoza defeat. |
