| Earliest king of Portugal (1139–85), born in Guimarães, N Portugal. He was only two years old at the death of his father, Henry of Burgundy, the conqueror and first Count of Portugal, so that the management of affairs fell to his mother, Theresa of Castile. Wresting power from her in 1128, he defeated the Moors at Ourique (1139), and proclaimed himself king. He took Lisbon (1147), and later all Galicia, Estremadura, and Elvas. |
