| Duke of Ferrara, Modena, and Reggio, born in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, N Italy. The son of Ercole I and Eleonora of Aragón, he married Lucrezia Borgia in 1501 and became duke in 1505. In 1508 he joined the Cambrai League and defeated Venice the following year. He joined the French alliance that defeated the combined army of the pope and Spain in 1512 at Ravenna. He promoted the arts and helped, among others, Titian and Ludovico Ariosto. |
