| Byzantine emperor (1203–4), born in Constantinople. He was the son of Isaac II and escaped to Italy after his father was dethroned by Alexius III. With the help of Pope Innocent III and Enrico Dandolo's Venetian forces, he returned to Constantinople. When the city fell to the crusaders (1203), he was reinstated to the throne together with his father. Soon after, he was murdered during an issurrection headed by Alexius Ducas (Alexius V). |
