| biography:
| Byzantine emperor (1195–1203). He became emperor after plotting against his brother Isaac II, but was unable to stop the empire's economic collapse, and was forced to leave Constantinople in 1203 by the arrival of the crusaders. Taken prisoner in 1210 and sent to Italy, he was ransomed by the Genoese and confined to a monastery by his son-in-law, Theodore Lascaris, where he died. |
