| biography:
| Russian soldier, born a noble of Pskov, NW Russia. He was chief-of-staff in the Turkish war (1877–8), commander-in-chief in Caucasia (1897), minister of war (1898), and commander-in-chief in Manchuria (1904–5) against the victorious Japanese. He commanded the Russian armies on the Northern Front (Feb–Aug 1916), then was Governor of Turkestan until the Revolution in 1917. |
