| Writer, born in Moscow, Russia. Expelled from the University of Moscow for taking part in student riots, he lived in St Petersburg, becoming involved with the Symbolists, but left Russia at the Revolution, going first to Berlin and finally settling in Paris. His writing is full of national pride and a deep love of old Russian traditions and folklore, and contains realism, fantasy, and humour. His main works are the novels (trans titles) The Pond, The Clock, Fifth Pestilence, and Sisters of the Cross, as well as several legends, plays, and short stories. |
