| Second Romanov tsar of Russia (1645–76), who succeeded his father, Michael Romanov. He waged war against Poland (1654–67), regaining Smolensk and Kiev. His attempts to place the Orthodox Church under secular authority brought him into conflict with the Patriarch, Nikon. By his second wife he was the father of Peter I. |
