| Soldier, born in Tbilisi, Georgia. In World War 1 he led the invasion of Galicia (1914) and in the Carpathians. From 1916 he distinguished himself on the Eastern Front, notably in the successful Brusilov Offensive against the Austrians in 1916. He became chief-of-staff in 1917. After the revolution he commanded forces in the war against Poland (1920). |
