| biography:
| Painter, born in Champigneulle, NE France. Trained in the Flemish tradition of Snyders, he was court portraitist to King Jan Sobieski of Poland (1695–6), and on his return to France became official painter of hunting scenes to Louis XIV and Louis XV. He painted still-lifes, decorated the royal palaces, and made cartoons for the Gobelin tapestry makers, but he is most famous for his hunting scenes which are early examples of painting direct from nature. He was a member of the Académie. His works include La Chasse au Loup (1725, Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes). |
