| biography:
| Dancer and teacher, born in Peterhof, NW Russia. She studied at the Imperial and State Ballet Schools in St Petersburg, and in 1924 toured Europe, joining Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes Company until his death. She danced as prima ballerina with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo (1938–52), and created leading parts in the works of Balanchine and Massine. She then taught at the School of American Ballet. |
