| Dutch statesman, lord of Aartsbergen, born in Arnhem. A faithful counsellor of Stadholder Frederick Henry of Orange and later of William II, he advised moderation and the raising of the siege of Amsterdam. During 1621–54 he kept a diary, Gedenkschriften, which was later published and is a major source of historical data. |
