| biography:
| Theatre director and actor, born in Rovno, SW Ukraine. He acted in Kiev, St Petersburg, Riga, and Simbirsk (1905–13), then directed at the Free Theatre in Moscow, before founding the Moscow Chamber Theatre with his wife in 1914. He remained director of this theatre until shortly before his death, pioneering a ‘synthetic theatre’ of abstract balletic movement which aspired to the emotional precision of music. His Notes of a Director appeared in 1921. |
