| biography:
| Dutch statesman and politician, born in Rotterdam, W Netherlands. He served as an army officer in the Netherlands East Indies (1881–1901) and entered parliament (Anti-Revolutionaire Partij) in 1901. He was minister of colonial affairs (1902–5, 1908–9), Governor of Suriname (1905–8), and governor-general of the Netherlands East Indies (1909–16). He had to cope with the beginnings of the nationalist movement, towards which his policy was favourable. On his return to The Netherlands he was again minister of colonial affairs (1918–19), minister of state (1923), and member of the Council of State (1924). |
