| biography:
| Russian soldier, born in Moscow, Russia. He won fame in the Seven Years' War (1756–63), the Russo-Polish War (1768–72), and in the war against the Turks (1787–92), and in 1799 was sent to Italy to assist the Austrians against the French, defeating them on the Adda, at Trebbia, and at Novi. He was then directed to join Alexander Rimsky-Korsakov to sweep the French out of Switzerland. After a terrible march over the Alps he found that Masséna had already defeated Korsakov; too weak to attack, he succeeded in escaping with most of his troops. |
