| biography:
| Pope (1655–67), born in Siena, Tuscany, NW Italy. Papal nuncio at Cologne (1639–51), he took part in the congress which led to the Peace of Westphalia (1648), but was against the Peace. In 1651 he served as secretary-of-state to Pope Innocent X. Once pope, he opposed Jansenism and clashed with France. He promoted Rome's urban development and built the churches of the Piazza del Popolo and La Sapienza library (University of Rome). He was patron to the sculptor Bernini. |
