| biography:
| Composer, born in Tula, W Russia. At the age of 22 he retired from government service to devote himself to music, and composed his first opera, Esmeralda. Later, under the influence of the Russian nationalist composers, his setting of Pushkin's The Stone Guest (completed by Rimsky-Korsakov) anticipated the work of Moussorgsky in its dramatic power and naturalistic treatment of words. |
