| biography:
| Russian hero and saint, prince of Novgorod, born in Vladimir, W Russia. In 1240 he defeated the Swedes in a famous battle on the R Neva, near the site of modern St Petersburg, and in 1242 he defeated the Teutonic knights on the frozen L Peipus. Although a vassal of the Mongol occupation army, he sought to live with them in peace, and suppressed anti-Mongol revolts. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. Feast day 30 August or 23 November. |
