| Rabbi and organization executive, born in Munich, Germany. He went to the USA in 1937. A graduate of the City College of New York, he was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and served in the US Army in the 10th Mountain Division in World War 2. He was associate rabbi at Temple Emmanuel in Worcester, MA (1959–63), and was named president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1973–96). In 1976–8 he was president of the Conference of Major Jewish Organizations. |
