| biography:
| Painter, designer, and photographer, born in St Petersburg, NW Russia. He trained at the Kazan Art School, and met Tatlin and the young Russian avant garde. After the revolution he worked for the People's Commissariat of Enlightenment, and taught at the Moscow Proletkult School (1918–26). His most original works were his abstract spatial constructions and his documentary photographs of the new Communist society. |
