| Physicist, born in Atherton, Queensland, NE Australia. His family returned to the Soviet Union after the Revolution, and he became professor at Lebedev Physics Institute, Moscow, where he worked on the principles of lasers with Nikolai Basov. They shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1964. |
