| biography:
| Pope (1159–81), born in Siena, C Italy. He taught law in Bologna, and became adviser to Pope Adrian IV. After his election he was engaged in a struggle with Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa who refused to recognize him, and set up antipopes until compelled to sign the Treaty of Venice (1177). He was also involved in the quarrel between Henry II of England and Thomas Becket. In 1179 he called the third Lateran Council. |
