| biography:
| Pope (1061–73), born in Baggio, near Milan, N Italy. He was Bishop of Lucca, supported the Patarines, and became pope with the suppport of the Normans and Ildebrando da Soana (Gregory VII), who wielded great influence over his papacy. He was opposed by Agnes, the Empress Regent, who supported antipope Onorio II. He encouraged the reform of the clergy, fought simony, and promoted close links with Spain and the fight against the Arabs. |
