| biography:
| Russian Socialist, born in Simbirsk, W Russia. He studied law in St Petersburg, and took a leading part in the 1917 revolution, becoming minister of justice (Mar), minister of war (May), and premier (Jul) in the provisional government. Being on the right wing of Socialism, Kerensky suppressed the Bolshevik party whose leader, Lenin, escaped to Finland; Trotsky was arrested. Kerensky could not prevent economic and military deterioration, however, enabling renewed disruption by the Bolsheviks. He crushed the military revolt (Aug) led by Kornilov, the Russian army commander, but was deposed (Oct) by the Bolsheviks, and fled to France. In 1940 he went to Australia, and in 1946 to the USA, and wrote several books on the Russian revolution. |
