| British physician, writer, and poet. He studied at Cambridge University and the London Hospital. His working life, on both sides of the Atlantic, was devoted to the study and treatment of the physical and mental problems of growing old. As well as numerous academic texts, he published books of poems (such as Haste to the Wedding, 1961), plays, and novels, including Tetrarch (trilogy, 1980) and The Philosophers (1989). He also wrote The Joy of Sex (1973) which sold over 12 million copies around the world and was translated into more than 20 languages. |
