| biography:
| Italian politician and president (1978–85), born in Stella, Liguria, NW Italy. He joined the Socialist Party in 1918, was strongly opposed to Fascism, and was arrested, imprisoned, and then interned. Freed in 1943, he was sentenced to death, but escaped from jail and became one of the leaders of the liberation committee, and an organizer of the April 1945 insurrection. A leader of the PSI (Socialist Party) in 1945, he became a member of the Constituent Assembly (1946), a senator (1948), and a deputy (1953). He was a very popular and able president of the republic. |
