| Film director, born in Yekaterinburg, W Russia (formerly, Sverdlovsk, USSR). In 1983, after studying languages in Gorky and working as a translator for the Soviet Army, he began working as a jobbing director at Sverdlovsk Film Studios. His directorial debut came in 1989 with Yegor and Nastya. Later films include Schastlivye dni (1992, Happy Days), Zamok (1994, The Castle), Brat (1997, The Brother), the award-winning Pro urodov I lyudej (1998, Of Freaks and Men), and Brat II (2000, The Brother II). Balabanov's films are a dark portrayal of post-communist Russian society, focusing on his country's abuse of capitalism and endemic racketeering. |
