| biography:
| Novelist, born in Kimry, near Tver, W Russia. He became a Communist in 1918, and fought in Siberia. Deeply influenced by Tolstoy, his works include Molodaya gvardiya (1946, The Young Guard). As general secretary of the Soviet Writers' Union (1946–55) he mercilessly exposed any literary ‘deviationism’ from the Party line, but after becoming a target himself he committed suicide in Moscow. |
