| Novelist and journalist, born in Málaga, S Spain, who was connected with the Generación del 1898 by age though not by ideology. He led a Bohemian existence in Madrid and Paris, dying blind and insane in abject poverty. Zola's influence pervades his novels, which include La mujer de todo el mundo (1885), Crimen legal (1886), Declaración de un vencido (1887), Noche (1889), Un criadero de curas (1890), La sima de Igusquiza (c.1897), and Iluminaciones en la sombra (1910). Valle-Inclán, in his play Luces de Bohemia, used Sawa as the model for his hero, Max Extrella. |
